Will Ohio River Get Optional Pollution Limits as New Fracking-Reliant Plastics Industry Moves in?

Posted June 5, 2019 by Sharon Kelly

Shell's petrochemical and plastics plant in Potter Township, Pennsylvania

Tomorrow, June 6, in Covington, Kentucky, a routine quarterly meeting of the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO), an eight-state compact responsible for setting water pollution control standards for the 981-mile Ohio River, is expected to fall under unusual scrutiny from both industry and environmentalists.

ORSANCO is considering a proposal to make its water pollution standards — designed to coordinate pollution rules the length of the river — voluntary amid a brewing battle over the fate of a river that’s both the source of drinking water for 5 million people and central to the petrochemical industry’s plans for a new fossil-fueled plastics manufacturing network.

Central New Brunswick Woodmen’s Museum Gets Building Upgrades

Posted July 22, 2016 by Canada News Centre - National News

Renovations will improve overall visitor experience as well as the museum’s energy and cost-efficiency
Pat Finnigan, Member of Parliament for Miramichi – Grand Lake, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA); and the Honourable Bill Fraser, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure and Minister the Northern and Miramichi funds, today joined officials from the Central New Brunswick Woodmen’s Museum to make the funding announcement.

The project consists of upgrading the main building’s entrance, washrooms, roof and existing heating system as well as repairing the Quonset Huts and roof. These upgrades will improve the museum’s energy efficiency and help reduce operating costs.

The Government of Canada has invested $68,796 in the project through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP150), while the Province of New Brunswick has contributed $68,181.

CIP 150 is providing up to $300 million nationally over two years to support projects to rehabilitate, renovate and expand community and recreational infrastructure as part of the Government of Canada’s activities to honour Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation.

This project also builds on the Government of Canada’s commitment to drive economic growth in Atlantic Canada through strategic investments in infrastructure, as announced in July 2016 in Prince Edward Island as part of the Atlantic Growth Strategy.
